According to the roster of the 5th Regiment Infantry, Illinois National Guard, he was a sergeant (band) having enlisted August 5, 1916 and reported for duty on March 26, 1917 at Danville, Illinois. He was a bass player in the original 5th Illinois Regimental Band.
He is listed in the roster of Headquarters Company, 129th Infantry, 33rd Division, on its return to the United States with the rank of Mess Sergeant. His home address is given as 113 W. Harrison St., Danville, Illinois.
